BHP's September quarter iron ore output up 24%

Iron ore production grew to 39.56 million tonnes from 31.98 million tonnes a year earlier. Quarter on quarter iron ore production was 11% higher with shipments from Western Australia Iron Ore at a record annualised rate of 173 million tonnes per annum in the three months to end September.

"Western Australia Iron Ore continued to benefit from the dual tracking of the company's rail infrastructure, increasing overall system capability," the group said in its quarterly production report.

The Yandi Joint Venture in Australia also recorded an increase in mine production following the ramp up of Ore Handling Plant 3 under the management of BHP Billiton's owner operator workforce.

"Consistently strong performance following the ramp up of the third pellet plant at Samarco (Brazil) continues to reinforce our confidence in the next phase of expansion," the group added.

Copper production on the other hand dropped 24% year on year to 291,200 tonnes from 272,300 tonnes in the September quarter of 2010.

Quarter on quarter copper production was 19% lower due primarily to lower ore grades and industrial action at Escondida in Chile, planned maintenance activity at Pampa Norte in Chile and planned smelter and refinery outages at Olympic Dam in Australia.
